In 2025, we honour the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel, one of the most influential and visionary composers of the 20th century. Renowned for his exquisite craftsmanship and pioneering approach to orchestration, Ravel’s music remains a touchstone of modern classical repertoire. His ability to blend lush harmonies, vivid orchestral colours, and meticulous detail has solidified his legacy as a master of the musical language.
Tonight's program showcases the brilliance and versatility of Ravel’s work, taking us on a journey through some of his most iconic compositions. We begin with the hypnotic Boléro, perhaps Ravel's most famous work, known for its mesmerizing repetition and thrilling crescendo. From there, we explore the refined elegance of Le Tombeau de Couperin, a suite that fuses Baroque inspiration with Ravel’s own lyrical voice, written in tribute to friends lost during World War I.
Following the intermission, we move into the magical world of Ma Mère l’Oye (Mother Goose), a suite of fairy tale-inspired movements that demonstrate Ravel’s genius for vivid orchestration and imaginative storytelling. Finally, the evening concludes with Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, a work that blends jazz influences with Ravel’s signature style, filled with both exuberant energy and lyrical beauty.
